Real stories from men as allies.
Storysharing is a critical part of being an ally. Men as allies share their stories and channel empathy to women. My years of speaking and training on the topic “Engaging Men as Allies” for women in leadership, has led to accumulation of what I call the “tales from the trenches.”
Here is a behind the scenes story that a senior leader in technology shared with me about being an ally for women…
I have a networking group for CIOs. Of the 175 members, only 20 are women, and usually only one comes to our monthly networking event. I have asked why they don’t come to networking events, and gotten little feedback. So, we organized a dinner with the 20 women and I was the only man present. I realized what they were talking about first hand, being the only man with all women.
I get it, now.
I sought their feedback and we had a very open discussion. It is hard being the only person that looks like you in the room.
